Glimmer of light

@Ed Sheeran and @Elton John perform ‘Merry Christmas’ on The One Show 🤩🎄 BBC #BBC #TheOneShow #BBCiPlayer

I think many of us need us need a glimmer of light in these times and in our lives in general. At least i know i do. So instead of talking about endless loneliness, exhaustion, isolation which is weighing me down with no end in sight, i’ll give you the one thing which made me smile for 5 mins the other day. They said they wanted to write a sort of classic hit for Xmas, have thrown everything and the kitchen sink at it and they may have succeeded. It’s catchy and enjoyable.

Not sure everyone can watch the above which was live yesterday in the BBC studio, so i’ll leave you with the official video too. Go Elton, go Ed! And thanks for the tune!

Noel Gallagher on Desert Island Discs BBC Radio4

It’s a sunny day out there but a bit chilly and a bit of great music seems just the right thing. Who hasn’t heard of Oasis? Or Noel Gallagher? But did you know apart from being a brilliant musician and a straight speaking lad he was also utterly charming?

Trust me this lunch time listening (from a Friday in July) will put a smile on your face:

” Kirsty Young’s castaway this week is the musician, Noel Gallagher. He was the principal songwriter of the band Oasis – his younger brother, Liam was the lead singer. Born to Irish parents, as a child he spent his summers visiting his mother’s family in rural County Mayo, in sharp contrast to the Manchester council estate where they lived. He taught himself to play the guitar and loved music: he was road manager for the Inspiral Carpets before joining Liam in Oasis.Their debut album in 1994 marked the beginning of the band’s rise to fame as part of the Britpop movement. In 1996 they played in front of 250,000 fans over two consecutive nights at Knebworth and following the Labour landslide in 1997, Noel attended what became known as the Cool Britannia party held in Downing Street by Tony Blair. Oasis won six BRIT Awards and two Ivor Novello Awards before disbanding in August 2009.

He’s since formed his own band – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Producer: Cathy Drysdale.”

Summer Sunday

I’ve bumped into this song mid week and i was really looking forward to sharing it this Sunday. I absolutely love it!! It’s not the first time i’ve gotten enormous simple joy out of Diego Torres’ songs 🙂 Back to basics 🙂 Needless to say i love dancing on these rhythms and i do, my feet simply can’t stay still when i listen to this. It also brings back wonderful relaxed memories of simple, unencumbered, worry free  times. Here’s hoping for a Sunday like this: (Spanish and my clunky English translation below):

Aunque tengamos mil problemas,

Lara ra, lara ra , lara ra, lara ra,
Lara ra, lara ra, lara ra, lara ra.
Rico me
Buena Pura Vida !

……………………

I enjoy being back at home
And wake up full of its smells.
Like the morning coffee
Which always reaches me in to bed and puts the alarm clock to sleep.
I have a date today with the pillow
And a meeting with the fan,
An outing with my dog
Because he doesn’t take excuses and makes me give the armchair a break.

Today, today it’s Sunday, there are no commitments to the clock,
Because today, today is Sunday and there is nothing better.

(Ruben Blades)

I open a wine in the kitchen
And a good steak is waiting on the coal.
Although we have a thousand problems,
Today we give the troubles a rest and feed the heart .
Let nothing disturb this moment,
It is a day of celebration,
We must toast to joy,
Chuck out all bad energies because by tomorrow( Monday) it’s over.

Today, today it’s Sunday, there are no commitments to the clock,
Because today, today is Sunday and there is nothing better.
Today, today it’s Sunday, there are no commitments to the clock,
Because today, today is Sunday and there is nothing better.
Draw maestro … ..

Today is Sunday and it’s no good for work,
Today is Sunday, the day to enjoy.

(Ruben Blades)
Tomorrow is a holiday and don’t argue with me
Because I’ve got the calendar in Spanish and English.

Today is Sunday and it’s no good for work,
Today is Sunday, the day to enjoy.

But look, when two Latinos meet it’s all the same
Be it Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday, it’s always like Sunday.
Today is Sunday and it’s no good for work,
Today is Sunday, the day to enjoy.

Say it Ruben,

(Ruben Blades)
On Sunday we go to Mass
Patron to the spiritual, then family and friends gather to celebrate,
Lara ra, ra lara, lara ra, ra lara,
Lara ra, ra lara, lara ra, ra lara.
Rico me
Buena Pura Vida! (the real good life)

…….

I hope the video above has no restrictions, just in case here is an image based version made by the DT fan club so you can at least get a sense of the song with images from the clip:

1 January 2015 means one thing!

Happy New Year everyone!

Hope you have made it safely and merrily into 2015 🙂 Here’s a little something to start the year:

It’s time for the Wiener Philarmoniker Neujahrskonzert again! This year’s concert will be conducted by Zubin Mehta and you can find the detailed program here.

In my family we don’t have any traditions bar one, and that is watching the Neujahrskonzert together on the 1st of January. It’s something we all enjoy and i don’t feel the year has started properly if i don’t see it live. In memory i’ve only missed it once when i had to travel back for work and it made for a stressful start for everyone. Hopefully today it will prove a nice, relaxed, peaceful few hours we spend together enjoying music we love.

Until then, there are plenty versions to enjoy from the past on the internet, but 2010 with Georges Pretre conducting was one of my very favourites, so here it is 🙂

Prosit Neujahr!
