Just a minute

Just a minute BBC R4 Host Nicholas Parsons with Julian Clary, Stephen Fry and David Tennant

Is a show on BBC Radio4 which involves public speaking (free and spontaneous) on a given subject for 1 minute 🙂 For example like this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02jrpxz/player

“David Tennant’s days with the Royal Shakespeare Company came in useful when he was asked to talk for 60 seconds without hesitation, repetition or deviation on the topic, ‘Exit, pursued by a bear’ (Release date: 11 Feb 2015)”

And it was his first time on the show 🙂

I love the English language although i know i’ll never be as good at it as i wish… I find i’m often reminded by how beautiful it actually is not watching the news or reading papers, not even reading books, but hearing people speak, actors in particular. Of course the language is their main professional tool and they probably understand it better than most of us, but still, the capacity some of them have to express ideas fluently, in a very rich vocabulary is fascinating. And it’s not only the vocabulary, it’s also the accents that I find fascinating. I could listen to people like Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, David Tennant, Stephen Fry, Richard Armitage, Ewan McGregor talk for hours and not get bored (and many more, the list is just too long to mention them all). Not just because they seem to always have something interesting to say, but also because of the way they say things and how they use the language and the words.

Of course reading enriches our vocabulary, but I think the active use of the language, the sounds and words show us how truly beautiful English can really be. And however much I like to experience it spoken on a stage, I find the unrestricted use of it in free speech even more fascinating. (Especially when it doesn’t come through discourse used by politicians, although I appreciate it when they are competent at it.)

I didn’t know about this show, but it is amazing fun and tests the speakers under quite stressful conditions 🙂 There are of course rules ..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02jrq42/player

“(Doctor) Who’s the new boy on Just a Minute? The rules are simple. Or are they? Just a Minute virgin, David Tennant gets confused and receives a lesson in the English language from Nicholas Parsons. David joins veterans Stephen Fry, Julian Clary and Paul Merton for a hilarious Just a Minute challenge. (Release date: 11 Feb 2015)”

In case you want to listen to the whole 30 min of the show, the link is below 🙂 We can safely say David knows a lot about Shakespeare 😉 And can talk about it quite brilliantly. But there is a lot more in there to listen to from some very competent guests, good fun and a lot of innuendo 😉  Enjoy!! (it is available for another 28 days)

    • ohh, the best loves Dr Who 😉 (although some will diverge from this option, but in majority he is) and a very good Shakespearean actor (loved his Hamlet along others and his Richard II) and a good actor otherwise too 🙂 just better know on this side of channel i guess and i’d like to keep him around here ;-)) And he’s lovely too

        • yes i was lucky! It was the first time i saw him on stage! Last year was a year of many firsts in the theatre for me. I went in very doubtful as you always wonder if famous actors will be bas exciting live on stage. But boy was it a pleasant surprise! I thought he nailed Richard II! The youthfulness, the petulance, the vanity but also the innocence and vulnerability and the dignity at surprising times. On top of his perfect diction of course. He really was Richard II for me, in sympathetic and shocking and appalling ways. He made him multidimensional which is just what one could hope for. I hope and pray he will be back on stage sometimes soon! I am sure he will, stage work has always been a big part of his work. By the way the DVD of Rich II is also available now from amazon 😉

        • Oh great! Thanks for the heads up. Going to use a gift card and buy it. 🙂

I’m determined to see him in every Shakespearean play he does as I think he’s going run the gamut as he ages. (Hope I won’t be too old by the time he gets to King Lear). Only missed him in Romeo & Juliet and Richard II. Have seen Hamlet, Love’s Labor’s Lost and Much Ado. Getting quite the education along the way. 🙂

          • i missed him as Romeo too, but he was way too young and unknown unfortunately. I’d have loved him as Romeo i suspect 🙂 I’m kind of disappointed he will not be my first live Hamlet either, that will be Cumberbatch, who i am very much looking forward to as well, but however much i appreciate Batchy for his acting chops the soft spot for David is much bigger and he just has that natural vulnerability.. But it will be interesting to see how Batchy fairs. Loved David in Hamlet once i got to see the DVD, my fried saw him 7 times live… Same friend who also introduced me to RA, she’s got excellent tastes 🙂
And yes to education too, David makes Shakespeare seem to natural and.. well, easy 😉

  1. He did a great extemporaneous speech there! BTW… just started Broadchurch, episode 1 last night. It’s right up my alley, and my first time to see DT in anything =)

    • ah yes, that is a great one! And the Escape Artist if you can find it too. Sad to say Broadchurch 2 not quite as good, but it would have been impossible to keep that standard. DT has him in Much Ado where he is great, not sure if they have his Hamlet, but that is def worth a watch too 🙂 I can’t wait to see him back on stage soon.

      • Agree, and yes Casanova 😉 I recommended the other stuff first because i guess i want people to think of him as a brilliant Shakespearean 🙂 I loved him in Casanova in spite of the blue contacts LOL but that series is more particular 😉 he’s somebody whose work i’ll always enjoy i think.

      • I will definitely check those out… I have a new TV that is supposed to be able to stream DT directly… talked Hubby into that as our mutual Christmas gift to each other. He totally knows it’s so I can watch The Crucible on a nice big screen, but he has the benefit of watching football so he’s not exactly suffering. I think I’ll test out the DT app on one of Tennant’s performances while I wait for the eventual release of TC. Also just saw I can stream The Escape Artist from Amazon Prime. Who knows, maybe I’ll go from clueless about Tennant to a fervent admirer in a matter of weeks. =)

        • most go that way LOL If you like suspense/thrillers you’ll love that. I like the theme it tackled and of many things i’ve seen i’d rate that highest on tension, very very well done on that point.
Ah i think i know the telly, that has been on the top of my wishlist since i discovered RA when suddenly watching DVD’s in better quality has become a point of interest :-p And yes i want one with that app for the same reason, so predicable 😉 But i’m entitled because what i have is one of those old fashioned boxy ones, not even a flat screen 😉 so time for an upgrade

          • I can relate… we’ve made it a point in our marriage not to buy the latest technology just because it’s out there. We have to be able to afford it before we go and buy it. Our TV up until now has been only slightly larger than our computer monitor, so it’s been really great to be able to actually see the TV from the kitchen, not to mention the HD and all the streaming we can do, AND the fact that the whole family does not now share the one TV… shuffled the little TV off to the kid’s playroom and don’t have to suffer their cartoons constantly! lol

    • you’ll love it 🙂 it’s so ‘David’ 🙂 And he’s even better at it than i thought he would be. But i haven’t watched too many of his interviews and things, i’m used to seeing him act more than speak freely but he’s brilliant and we’ve always know he is a smart man 🙂

      • I’ve seen him on many talk shows and interviews. The interesting thing about him is friends say he is quiet and retiring in RL, yet he has a very engaging, witty, charming and seemingly outgoing public persona as you can see. Very interesting bloke, that one.

        • yes he is and a lot like his dad it seemed from that video. I’ve seen him interact with fans and it was lovely, the patience on that man! But he seems to be very down to earth which i love 🙂

      • You might not like it. It’s predictable and a little sappy but I like David Tennant and Kelly Macdonald and I love the accents. Sometimes I just want some fluff. I don’t know if I’d buy the DVD either 😉

  2. I could not agree more about the joy of listening to people who know their way around the exhilarating, exasperating, beautiful English language. I too am fascinated by accents. The British Library has a set of CD’s recording all the accents of the UK, which I am very tempted to buy. It does not include Ireland. They need a set of their own 🙂
