with ballet 🙂
I’ve finished listening to ‘Clarissa’ this morning and i am so frustrated i could explode. I’ll let it stew and churn for a bit and once i’ve had a chance to collect the scattered thoughts i’ll let you know what i thought of it. Until then, here is something vastly more satisfying, believe me, you’ll enjoy it! It’s an extract, the version i saw live in the show was slightly longer but this is most of it.
Steve McRae and Ed Watson, as you surely know by now are my favourite principals in the Royal Ballet 🙂 I am in fact going to ballet again tonight, for a repeat of the evening i had a week ago. I loved it so much i HAVE to see it again! So while i am away i want to leave you in good company 🙂 It’s quite likely i have shared this with you before, sorry if this is the case.
Principal of The Royal Ballet Steven McRae performs his tap solo Czárdás with violinist Vasko Vassilev as part of World Ballet Day 2015
Aren’t they fantastic?
In case this is a repeat there is a slightly longer rehearsal of another modern piece i love.
Royal Ballet Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett rehearses his new ballet The Age of Anxiety with dancers Laura Morera, Steven McRae, Bennet Gartside and Tristan Dyer. This piece was just… ‘scrumptious’.. it was fun and sad and melancholic and thoughtful

I’ll talk again about Liam Scarlett, the choreographer, in a few months’ time when we’ll see his new full length ballet, Frankenstein, about which we are all very excited here. Until then the rehearsal for Age of Anxiety. Liam Scarlett sets Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony no.2, ‘The Age of Anxiety’, inspired by W.H. Auden’s epic poem. In a New York bar in wartime four lonely strangers attempt to find spiritual meaning in an industrialized world.
The weekend is here, relax, everyone!
Wow, Steve McRea ist großartig!
Dir auch ein schönes WE.

Enjoy the ballet and have a nice weekend yourself!

thanks very much, you too! and yes he’s amazing when he is in his element. That’s probably what i like about my 2 ballet heroes, that they are not what you would expect from classical ballet dancers 🙂

it is, isn’t it? Those 2 are so creative! Vasko is one of the concert masters of the ROH orchestra and he’s amazing, they put this number together between the 2 of them for that gala and it needs them both to be in tune with each other, brilliant 🙂

Gorgeous! I love how it becomes an interactive duet between McRae and Vassilev, the violinist, who is just as impressive in his own way. I’m a lover of tap, and I’ve never seen it combined with ballet before. Fascinating, and mesmerizing.

Vasko is one of the concert masters of the ROH orchestra , it’s always a treat when is is playing and not off for some solo performance. It takes a violinist who is equally as good as the dancer to pull this off.
You’d never think Steve was a tap-dancer if you saw him on stage, such innate elegance! I found out only later he was equally good, you could say it’s a hobby of his! When they have time for hobbies is beyond me with the punishing schedules. But once i saw him tap i realised this is where he gets his dizzying speed in turns, no other dancer at the ROH has his turns and none that i have ever seen live.
I am so glad he is branching out a bit, doing more of this stuff and making more of his talents 🙂 He’s also started to do more new roles, and things that are less classic and i think it has give him a great boost as a dancers. It’s great to see wonderful dancers grow 🙂

Yes, the speed with which he moves those feet reminds me of some of the great Irish dancers. But I like tap dancing because there is more scope for the whole body to move. What he does seems very original, even the idea of tap dancing to that genre of music. I’d like to see more!

Sadly a lot of the ballet stuff is done in smaller shows and such or all over the world as they tend to guest a lot and few things get recorded. They can sell DVDs of classical stuff Sleeping Beauty and such but triples and things like that much harder to shift so they don’t get recorded which is a shame. I will point out some stuff that is worth getting though 😉

There should definitely be more recordings. I always feel that about theatre too. It may not be as good as live performance, but it preserves something for posterity.

i so agree!! now that we got most good stuff here in cinemas i miss having the same from Broadway! culture without borders is my motto! 🙂

Loved the versatile ballet/tap dancer Stephen McRea video! Thanks for sharing!
P.S. I’m not enamored of the subject matter of the Clarrissa story either. And RA manages to convey all of the eerily slime ball creepiness in the antagonist–whom I won’t name for obvious reasons. No relation. Ha!.

yes, it’s a disturbing interpretation, i don’t regret listening to it, but unlikely i will go back to it very soon 😉 Strange how some things audio only can be much more disturbing than anything visual…
and glad you like the little ballet bits 🙂
